UPI Refund Reversal Scam

Scammer claims to have sent money by mistake and asks you to return it

How this scam works

In this scam, you receive a message (usually on WhatsApp) claiming someone accidentally sent money to your UPI ID. They show a fake screenshot and request you to "return" the money. In reality, no money was sent — if you send money back, you're just giving them your money.

Scammers often use emotional manipulation, claiming the money is their salary, rent, or needed for a medical emergency. The fake payment screenshots are easily created using photo editing apps.

Warning signs

  • ⚠️Unsolicited message about receiving money you didn't expect
  • ⚠️Screenshot of payment (easily faked)
  • ⚠️Urgency: "Please return immediately, I need it urgently"
  • ⚠️Request to send to a different UPI ID than the supposed sender
  • ⚠️Emotional manipulation: "It's my salary", "medical emergency"
  • ⚠️Pressure to act quickly without verifying

Real examples

Hello, I accidentally sent Rs.5000 to your number instead of my friend. Please return it to my UPI: sharma.rahul@paytm. I am attaching screenshot.

Why this is a scam:

Legitimate mistaken transfers are reversed through bank, not by asking recipient

Sir/Madam, by mistake Rs.10000 credited to your account. This is my daughter's school fees. Please return urgently to 9876543210@ybl

Why this is a scam:

Emotional manipulation combined with urgency - classic scam tactic

What to do

  • Check your actual bank account — did you really receive money?
  • Never send money based on screenshots (they are easily faked)
  • If someone actually sent money by mistake, they can reverse it through their bank
  • Block and report the number
  • Do not engage in conversation — scammers are skilled manipulators
